`Biosolids2Energy` Research Project

Mar. 31, 2025

DEVISE participated in the Research Project titled: “LIFE B2E4SustWWTP – New concept for energy self-sustainable wastewater treatment process and biosolids management”.

The aim of the project is to primarily to reduce the High Energy demand in the Treatment of Wastewater and produce Electric & Thermal Energy from the organic byproducts of the treatment process, effectively then incorporate a “Waste-to-Energy” stage into the facility.

The proposed process in brief is, initially the effective mechanical removal of the ‘active’ Bio-Solids, rich in Organic Matter (carbon) and after a Dewatering Stage, this biomass is Dried using the heat from a Gasification process where the feedstock is ‘dried-biomass’. The Gasifier or the Pyrolysis produce Syngas, which is a mixture of Hydrogen and CO.This ‘syngas’ (H, CO) can be then used as “Green Fuel” to produce electric energy or other compounds.

DEVISE is collaborating for the implementation of this project with:

•the Research Committee of the Technical University of Crete, the Municipal Water Supply & Sewerage Authority of Crete (DEYAR) and a group of companies and scientific institutes (CETENMA, KAPA ENGINEERING).

PILOT PLANT -APPLICATION SITE

A real scale integrated system has been installed and is currently operating at the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) of Rethymno, Crete, Greece.

Positive effects:

  • Energy production
  • Management of biosolids
  • Solids & BOD loading reduction→ enhancement of WWTP’s performance
