Campbell Scientific Canada selects KISTERS WISKI to support Field and Data Services Department
Citrus Heights, CA -- After a detailed evaluation process of several meteorological data management solutions, both in-house and those from third party suppliers, Campbell Scientific Canada's (CSC) Field and Data Services Department decided to select the WISKI software from KISTERS as their preferred solution for managing client monitoring networks.
Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Campbell Scientific Canada is an ISO 9001 certified, Canadian owned company providing quality data acquisition systems, sensors and measurement instruments. In 2012, CSC launched a Field and Data Services Department within their company in response to a growing demand for managed monitoring networks. Along with the responsibility of maintaining station hardware, CSC's Field and Data Services Department is also in charge of the collection, management, QA/QC and reporting of the volumes of data being collected by the network for their clients. In order to provide a robust and flexible solution, the department set out to find a system that allows for customization, growth, and automation to enable them to achieve their goals and maximize efficiency.
CSC's own LoggerNet software offers many useful capabilities, such as the automatic polling of stations in the networks, collection of data and images, execution of scheduled tasks, and updating web content for client access. LoggerNet’s automation features are advantageous; therefore it was essential for the selected system to interface with LoggerNet and other internal systems. After a gap analysis of developing a solution in-house, CSC decided that it would be too costly to develop their own system and decided to review third-party developed applications - KISTERS WISKI software being one of them.
WISKI was selected because of its flexibility to handle any measurement made by any sensor on the market. It also offers advanced alarming capabilities that can be custom-configured to suit the unique needs of each client. Additional add-on modules for seamless field data collection were also high on CSC's priority list. The Field and Data Services Department has already begun the process of integrating WISKI and the Alarm Manager into their network of networks as the core repository of information. As Greg Kalmbach, the Field & Data Services Manager for CSC states, 'After reviewing all of the available options, WISKI stood out as clearly the best solution. It offers an incredible amount of flexibility which is exactly what we need as we anticipate growing this new business into something very special for CSC.'
Victoria Meszaros, from CSC’s Field and Data Services Department, was able to leverage existing technology within LoggerNet to build an automatic flow of data from LoggerNet to WISKI. Victoria used the LoggerNet SDK to develop an application that allocates which data points should be captured and what unique ID to assign to them. In tandem, a second program continuously monitors in the background and captures data from the LoggerNet database as it is collected from the field. The monitoring tool then validates the data that the allocation program has earmarked and places it into a staging database for WISKI to automatically import. 'Together, WISKI and LoggerNet have created a backbone for data collection for the Field and Data Services Department', says Victoria.
