Viridor opens GBP 7.1m MRF in Scotland

Waste management firm Viridor has unveiled a new £7.1 million materials recycling facility in Scotland.

Situated in Bargeddie, Lanarkshire, the ‘most advanced recycling’ plant is capable of recycling 60,000 tonnes of material each year, helping the country to reach its zero waste strategy.

Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment Richard Lochead said: “This plant can play a key role in helping Scotland meet out 70 per cent recycling target and is an example of the type of infrastructure Scotland needs to move away from landfill.

“There is no doubt that recycling and landfill targets are challenging; however they reflect where we need to get to. It won’t be an easy journey towards zero waste, it will require behavioural change, investment and commitment – but it is achievable.”

The facility will process kerbside collected dry recyclables including paper, plastic, cardboard and metal. The materials will be collected from residential, commercial and industrial sources.

Viridor Scottish regional director Colin Paterson said: “Our latest £7.1m investment in the country’s most advanced materials recycling facility is essential in ensuring families, communities, councils and the private sector meet ambitious Scottish and European recycling targets. Today is the next step in a bright future for a sustainable
Scotland.”

The facility has also created 19 new jobs.
