The Origin of Winter Gardenz: From Inspiration to Innovation

After building a successful advertising agency, entrepreneur and engineer John Herrick set out to find a fresh challenge—one where he could spark innovation and create meaningful impact. What he discovered during a journey through Europe would ultimately inspire the future of modern greenhouse design.

While exploring Germany ahead of Oktoberfest, John visited a friend who proudly introduced him to his “Veenter Garden”—a compact home greenhouse attached to the side of his house. Unlike traditional glass structures, this conservatory used lightweight polycarbonate panels to protect vegetables during harsh winter months. The durability and efficiency of this material sparked an idea.

As he continued traveling, John began noticing a trend—backyard greenhouses had barely evolved in decades. The rise of supermarkets and fast food had dulled the drive for homegrown produce. But John saw opportunity in modularity, sustainability, and smarter design. The concept of a kitset greenhouse for backyard growers took root.

Back in New Zealand, he transformed that idea into reality. After a year of prototyping and testing, the first Winter Gardenz greenhouse was born—combining bespoke and durable design for modern growers.

Today, Winter Gardenz offers a wide range of residential and commercial greenhouse solutions, including specialized structures for quarantine, research, and automation.
