Silver impregnated carbon is carbon that has certain compounds of silver added to it in order to remove harmful bacteria. Silver has compounds in it that are biostatic towards bacteria. It prevents the growth of bacteria and eliminates it as well. This is of particular interest in terms of hospital water filtration. The reason for this is they silver impregnated water filters can be used to eliminate and restrict the growth of Legionella, a respiratory disease-causing bacteria. Another great application for silver impregnated filters is in cooling towers, which use evaporation to reject wasteful heat and cool water to a lower temperature.
