Novax - Model SoundSafe Series -Advanced Pedestrian Systems
Advanced Pedestrian Systems have dramatically increased accessibility and safety for all pedestrians. Novax’s SoundSafe APS utilizes leading edge technology in conflict monitoring. Many of the APS devices available today operate without conflict monitoring. With over twenty-five years of experience in the design and manufacture of Advanced Pedestrian Systems and Traffic Signal Control solutions, Novax proudly presents its patent pending, APS SoundSafe.
- Cane friendly, high impact intelligent tactile buttons
- Raised Vibra-Tactile directional arrow
- Intuitive configuration GUI
- Simplified universal wiring requirements
- Wireless hand held device for remote configuration
- User defined settings can be saved and loaded
- Dynamic output monitoring ensures SoundSafe sounds remain perceptibly above ambient traffic noise
Sound selection can be made through the hand-held programming device and a Novax CIU. Each SoundSafe unit has the SoundSafe verification system built-in, reducing the potential for incorrect APS output (audio and tactile). APS output relays are set normally open by default, meaning that output will be monitored and verified by SoundSafe.
SoundSafe provides options for custom sound tones to be configured and selected as desired. Sound tones available by default have been selected to satisfy the majority of needs include:

SoundSafe APS Button Station is an integral part of the Pedestrian system and can deliver a directional message to the pedestrian in the crossing, as well as provide standard push button capability. The SoundSafe APS Button enclosure includes a push button, speaker, microphone, visual LED indicator and vibrating tactile arrow, and works with a Novax PIM (Power- Interface Module) located in the pedestrian signal head. The SoundSafe Button Station is the combination of the SoundSafe button enclosure and Power Interface Module.
SoundSet Wireless hand-held Programmer provides the ability to configure all SoundSafe settings, including sound selection, volume adjustment, and SoundSafe test capabilities via the CIU wirelessly. The SoundSafe system provides easy installation and maintenance by eliminating the need to physically configure APS Stations – The Power Line Communication system allows configuration via the units power cabling and the CIU.
SoundSafe Wireless system includes multiple security measures such as password protection and a hardware switch to prevent unauthorized access. The CIU has been designed with safety features preventing tampering and unauthorized access through wireless connections. The SoundSafe system confirms APS output signals match internal settings and agree with traffic signal information before allowing sound playback and vibration to occur. Sound verification helps prevent incorrect signals from reaching pedestrians.
SoundSafe CIU (Communications Interface Unit) provides wireless access and configuration of the APS Button Stations via the hand-held programmer. The CIU provides fault monitoring of the buttons as well as LED fault indicators. The CIU is required to program the button stations. If the special features as indicated in the table above are not required, the CIU is removed from the cabinet as the buttons will work without the CIU.
Configurable settings via the hand-held SoundSet programmer provide flexibility and user defined fields can be set up and saved in advance. A variety of settings can be adjusted, “locked and loaded”. The SoundSafe APS platform has been designed to support software and firmware upgrades, new sound files through uploads, and additional features as they become available.
Power Line Communications provides APS functionality to intersections that lack preexisting push-button wiring. Utilizing the CIU, APS Buttons can be installed without the need for new push-button wiring – creating accessibility in locations that were previously cost prohibitive or impossible due to wiring conditions.
