Vacuum breaking:
When a pipeline is drained, vacuum can occur unless air is permitted to get into the pipeline. Even if the whole pipeline is drained; there is column separation at peek points of the pipelines, which mean the water falls down by gravity to both directions at peak point. If there is no air valve at such peak points, vacuum occurs there as well.
