The operation mode of Norit series ultrafiltration technology adopts the full flow filtration. Therefore, it saves theoperation energy greatly, and the typical filtration pressure difference is 0.3-0.8bar (5-12PSI). The solidparticles deposited on the membrane surface are removed by regular backwashing, without any addition of anychemical cleaning agent. The solid dirt is removed by regular backwashing, thus avoiding the deposition on the membrane surface. Such operation mode is prior to the immersed membrane filtration. The immersedmembrane filtration adopts the external pressure filtration because of immersing the membrane in the water tank, so it will lead to the accumulation of solid contaminants in the water tank. And once any membrane silk is broken, it will lead to the leakage of contaminants into the effluent water. The dirt which is absorbed on the membrane surface and can`t be removed through backwashing shall be removed by online chemical enhanced backwashing (CEB). At this time, the membrane components will not be removed but cleaned online. A small amount of chemical cleaning agent shall be added in the process of chemical enhanced backwashing. After the short-time immersion (generally 5-10 minutes), the chemical cleaning agent will be discharged, and the ultrafiltration membrane is re-cleaned. Generally, it is not necessary to remove the Norit ultrafiltration membrane before cleaning, which avoids the possible cross contamination caused by the repeated use of cleaning agent. In addition, the artificial monitoring is not required in the equipment operation process.
Process parameters Such membrane component is used for the full flow filtration. The typical process parameters are as follows:
- Operating pressure: 0.1~0.2MPa
- Operating pressure difference: 0.01~0.1MPa
- Backwashing pressure: <0.3MPa
- Filtered water flux: 60~135 L/m2.h
- Filtration cycle: 15-60 minutes (depend on the quality of raw water)
- Backwashing flux: 250~300 L/m2.h
- Backwash time: 30-60 seconds (depending on the quality of raw water)
- CEB spacing: 12h-48h (depend on the quality of raw water)
- CEB dosing kinds and concentration:

Low construction site requirements
The ultrafiltration system can be installed in any flat ground with enough bearing capacity. It doesn`t require anyfield device, such as water tank for placing the membrane.
The operation is convenient.
The ultrafiltration membrane system realizes the completely automatic operation: The filtration, backwashing and chemical enhanced backwashing are monitored by the control system. It is not necessary to remove it before cleaning. Therefore, the operating expense only include the expense for chemical cleaning agent and energy consumption of system operation. High flux/low pressure, energy saving - Norit ultrafiltration membrane can keep higher flux during operation. According to the different purposes, the flux can be 60 -135L/m 2 h. The high performance of Norit XIGA ultrafiltration membrane guarantees the very low operating pressure of ultrafiltration system, generally 0.3-0.8bar. Thus, the system only requires the very low operation energy
consumption, generally 0.1-0.2kWh/m 3.
Under the condition of same effluent water capacity, the required membrane area is small.
Since the ultrafiltration system operation is carried out under the condition with high membrane flux, the required membrane area is smaller under the condition of same effluent water capacity. Thus, the membrane maintenance and replacement will decrease.
The membrane cleaning expense is low.
Norit membrane technology generally uses the common chemicals to clean the membrane. In addition, only the membrane cavity and connecting pipeline are soaked in the chemical cleaning agent during cleaning, thus greatly reducing the usage amount of chemical cleaning agent. Differing from it, the immersed membrane technology needs to make the whole water tank be filled with the cleaning agent.
High resistance to chemical corrosion
Norit ultrafiltration membrane can be operated and cleaned under the widespread chemical environment. During cleaning, pH value is 1-13. With the high resistance to oxidation, Norit ultrafiltration membrane can be used to treat water after chlorination and can be cleaned by the sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide and other strong oxidants.
The intelligent system guarantees the convenient and stable operation.
Norit uses the intelligent system to control the ultrafiltration process. The intelligent control system (CIS) can monitor the quality of influent water and transmit it to the central control system, thus adjusting the operating parameters. Under the condition with lower influent water turbidity, the backwashing frequency shall be adjusted properly.
