For ion-selective measurements an ion-selective membrane separates the sample solution from the electrode. Ammonium ions can pass through the membrane while other ions are excluded. The electrical voltage between this ammonium electrode and a reference electrode in solution is measured, allowing a continuous measurement with short response time.
