AmpX - Behind-The-Meter (BTM) Box
Our behind-the-meter (BTM) capability employs ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) technology for demand-side management of appliances, primarily for the provision of flexibility, but also for energy and cost optimisation. The Amp X BTM capability is housed in a small piece of hardware that connects to the local-area network via WiFi or ethernet cable.
Our BTM box is designed to operate "on the edge" with analytic and control decisions taking place locally. This provides a number of advantages for the user including reducing bandwidth requirements on the local network and ensuring that sensitive user data doesn`t leave the premises.
The way our BTM box works differs from current ‘smart home’ approaches, where the user defines a schedule that the system has to follow. Our autonomous system determines the schedule based on user preferences and behaviours observed over time. The user need not actively engage with the system after an initial setup - the system works to save and even earn the user money behind-the-scenes, and only requests the user’s attention when new opportunities might require changes in user behaviour or expectations.
Whether the end-user wants to control the devices in their factory, office or home, our BTM box is easy to set up and needs little input to operate. Devices are categorised and grouped based on their capacity to provide flexibility rather than by hardware type, and our innovative ‘edge autonomy’ approach to control ensures that the BTM box always takes care of the user and the devices under its control first.
When connected to our Aggregation Management Platform ecosystem, the Amp X BTM technology brings users further avenues for energy cost reduction, including the option to participate in the Amp X Transactive platform. Our BTM box identifies and forecasts available flexibility in an autonomous way, and GridSight aggregates this flexibility with that of other users to provide services into a number of markets. By participating in this way, our BTM box can further optimise an end-user`s cost with no noticeable impact to the user’s experience.
