Classification of Inoculants

The main types of inoculants are Ferrosilicon inoculant(FeSi inoculant), Calcium silicon barium inoculant(Ca-Si-Ba inoculant), Calcium silicon inoculant(CaSi inoculant),etc.

Ferrosilicon Inoculant(FeSi Inoculant)

Ferrosilicon inoculant is a ferroalloy, made of coke, steel scrap, quartz (or silica), and smelted in an electric furnace. It is mainly composed of silicon and iron. Silicon and oxygen are easy to synthesize silica, so ferrosilicon is often used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking. At the same time, a large amount of heat is released during the formation of SiO2, which can increase the temperature of molten steel and reduce energy consumption while deoxidizing. Ferrosilicon can also be used as an alloying element additive, widely used in low alloy structural steel, spring steel, bearing steel, heat resistant steel, and electrical silicon steel. FeSi is often used as a reducing agent in iron alloy production and the chemical industry. Ferrosilicon inoculant conventional sizes are 0.2-0.8mm, 1-3mm, and 3-8mm.

75 ferrosilicon is the more commonly used inoculant. The content of aluminum and calcium plays an important role in the inoculation effect. According to reports, ferrosilicon without aluminum and calcium has little or no use for the inoculation of gray cast iron. It is generally believed that molten iron, aluminum, and calcium will react with oxygen and nitrogen to form compounds with high melting points, which become the core of graphite crystals. Moreover, after adding the inoculant, local silicon-rich micro-regions can be formed in the molten iron, which is conducive to graphite precipitation. When purchasing ferrosilicon for incubation, the content of aluminum and calcium cannot be ignored.

FeSi 75, as a casting inoculant, the US standard stipulates that the aluminum content is 0.75-1.75%, and the calcium content is 0.5-1.5%. There are different models of China’s ferrosilicon standards. The upper limit of aluminum content is 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.0%. The upper limit of the calcium content is 1.0%. However, the aluminum content in the molten iron should not be too high, and the addition of 0.01% aluminum may cause subcutaneous pores in the casting.
