Current sensors are normally divided into 2 groups, Single-point Current Meters and Current Profilers. Single-point current meters will only measure the current in the exact depth where they are installed, and as sea currents often tend to vary significantly with depth, it’s often preferred to measure the current profile for the entire water column by using a Current Profiler.
Single-point Current meters
A+D can recommend sensors for single-point measurements based on acoustic or electro-magnetic principles, several of these with well-proven track records offshore. Current Speed and Direction are standard parameters, others such as Sea Temperature, Salinity, Conductivity and Pressure can be added when required. Can also be combined with CTD sensors.
Current profile measurements are very complex measurements that require thorough planning and very reliable
equipment. Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) can be delivered to profile water depths from a few meters up to max around 1000 meters. For greater water depths, several sensors can be linked together and the data can be merged by the system software.
Sensor deployment systems:
Sensors can be deployed in offshore applications in a number of different ways, the most common ones being deployment over the side of the vessel/rig by a winch and davit arrangement or deployed on a separate mooring.
A+D have experience with a number of different solutions and can advise, recommend and supply complete engineered packages.
