Beluga™Concertina Style Large Bag Barriers

SHARE

The Beluga Bag barrier is a unique flood control system that is ideal for protection of important property and infrastructure. Oversized Beluga bags can be used for flood control, levee height extension, water and stream diversion, blast protection, erosion control, storm surge protection, berm construction, and much more. The Beluga bag barrier is a concertina style big bag system, consisting of an integrated heavy duty bag, divided into 5 distinct chambers, ready to receive sand or other aggregate or fill material. Each individual compartment is incredibly strong and can hold over 5,000 lbs of fill.

Beluga bags ship flattened on pallets, ready to be opened, positioned and filled. Each BG1 bag is 3ft long, 3ft deep, and 40” high and replaces approximately 150 standard sand bags. Because there’s no wasted space, Begula Barriers use roughly 1/2 the amount of sand required for an equivalent sand bag barrier and significantly less labor to position and fill.  Each BG5 - 5 compartment bags, are 15ft long, 3ft deep, and 40" high, replaces approximately 750 sandbags.

Beluga bag barriers can be installed and filled by a relatively small crew as they can be positioned using only two people. Filling typically is done with material handling equipment. When full, Beluga bags can be moved using traditional material handling equipment (forklifts, cranes, Lull’s, etc) or a heavy duty spreader bar, capable of supporting the weight of a loaded Beluga bag.

Beluga Barriers Have Many Uses.

Beluga barriers can be used nearly anywhere you need to rapidly deploy a barrier to prevent floods. Protect utilities, secure subway systems, stop overflowing sewers, maintain clear city streets, provide perimeter protection to government and military installations, and much more….

Water Diversion.

Use Beluga barriers to divert water away from sensitive infrastructure and to protect property from rising flood waters.

Water Retention.

Keep water in a particular area by blocking its flow and preventing its migration to other areas.

Levee Heightening.

Reinforce and heighten levees by adding Beluga barriers on top of existing levees. Fill gaps in the levee or repair breached or damaged sections.

Sewer Drain Sealing.

Place oversized Beluga bags on top of sewer drains and outlets to prevent sewage from seeping out during sewer back ups or rising water levels.

Dimensions & Weights

Beluga - Single Bag (BG1):

Single Beluga bags are typically used for shorter runs or to terminate a run of larger Beluga Bags. We recommend designing your system around the BG5 bag below.

  • 3ft L x 3ft W x 40”H

  • Empty Weight: 2.5 Lbs

  • Filled Weight: Approx. 2630 lbs filled with dry sand

Note: Each Single bag includes 4ea. 2” x 10” double loop, heavy duty, lifting straps for transport.

Beluga - 5 Compartment Bag (BG5):

  • 15ft L x 3ft W x 40”H - incorporating 5 separate compartments each 36”L x3 6”W x 40”H

  • Empty Weight: 12 Lbs

  • Filled Weight: Approx. 13,150 lbs filled with dry sand

Note: Each Bag section includes 4ea. 2” x 10” double loop, heavy duty, lifting straps for transport, or 20 lifting straps per 5 compartment bag.

  • Seams are double stitched for added strength and durability

  • Bags have a capacity of 30 cubic feet of sand (filled to the top) per section x 5 sections = 150 cubic feet of sand per 5 compartment bag

  • 4,500lbs SWL (Safe Working Load) weight capacity per section of bag

  • 22,500lbs SWL (Safe Working Load) weight capacity per 5 compartment bag.

Material.

Woven PP with Triple Stiching

  • Beluga Bags are constructed using a durable 5.6oz, coated (impermeable) polypropylene fabric on 1 side and an uncoated 5.0 oz (water permeable) fabric on the other sides (allowing slow water drainage).

  • 170 GSM Fabric

  • 100% Polypropylene / RIC Code 5 / SPI Code PP

  • Fabric incorporates 2200 Hour UV Protection

  • Frame supports constructed from 5/8” heat treated plywood

  • NAICS Code: 314910

Damming Ability.

A single layer of sand filled Beluga Barrier can withstand 3ft water surges. Multiple Beluga bags can be stacked in a pyramidal shape to create a barrier roughly 9ft high. Engineer sign off is required for multilayered (stacked) or coffer-dam style designs.

Beluga Barriers are ground conforming, and when filled follow the contour of the ground below. Beluga bags can be used on all types of surfaces - concrete, asphalt, sand, grass, mud, and more.

Note: Closed top versions are available, on special order, for underwater applications.

Speed of Deployment.

Beluga Barriers are designed to be deployed by unskilled personnel. Each complete 5 compartment barrier weighs only 50lbs, with wooden inserts, allowing two people to move sections into position and to expand the accordion compartments for filling. Single Barriers are only 10lbs. Wooden Support Frames can be installed by one person to provide freestanding support prior to filling. With proper handling and fill equipment, a 100ft berm can be constructed using the Beluga 5 Compartment Bag (BG5) in approximately 2.5 hours with 2 people plus equipment operator.
