Microbial biosensor for measuring and monitoring the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)

Most popular related searches

WOLA MB-BOD technology is robust, reliable, rapid and monitors continuous data to help to determine the source of polluting discharges, vital to regulatory bodies and facilities likely to cause spillages.

Excess organic matter is the primary pollutant of aquatic ecosystems, its source often in effluents from municipal or industrial wastewater treatment processes and livestock activities.

Organic matter discharged into the natural environment alters the level of organisms that live in watercourses by decreasing the levels of dissolved oxygen.

Innovative elements

BOD measures the amount of oxygen consumed by the microbiological oxidation of organic matter present in water, under controlled conditions, it is a difficult technique to automate. This parameter best reflects the impact of organic matter in a natural environment, water eutrophication and its capacity for self-purification, but it takes five days to obtain a result. The presence of solvents, chlorine or disinfectants negatively affects the development of the test, too.

Our system is not affected by microbial activity inhibitors and it is eco-friendly – we do not use toxic reagents or generate harmful waste.

Over 210,000 hours of uninterrupted operation support the robustness of our MB-BOD device. Moreover, it is patented and supported by several Spanish organizations (Spanish Ministry of Public Works, CSIC and Government of Andalucía Region) and it is also verified by EU environmental and science bodies (PROMOTE-ETV, BIOSET, Concerted Action).

MB-DBO equipment has the following key features:

  • Short time analysis (45 minutes) and it takes 15 minutes of self-washing after each analysis.
  • Low cost analysis.
  • Low operational cost.
  • Frequency of analysis is fully programmable by the user.
  • Online control Interface: mobile phone, website, tablet..
  • Early Warning – above parameter limits – samples capture for an eventual/utter analysis in a laboratory.
  • Self-cleaning device.
  • Use of new sensor microorganisms in each analysis. In this way, sensor microorganisms couldn´t be affected by toxics that could have the previous analysed samples.
  • Good correlation with the classical analysis BOD5 (in laboratory).
  • Continuous results facilitate quick information-backed and decision-making
  • Maximum functionality, simple and ease of use device
  • Low detection limits.
  • Does not require the use of reagents.
  • Monitor inflows and effluents of water and wastewater treatment plants.
  • Source detection of water pollution.

Automated analytical equipment highly important, among others, in the following applications water quality monitoring process: water treatment and reuse, waste water treatment plants (WWTP) functioning, polluting industries, fish farming, aquaculture, hydroponic systems and environmental control – rivers, lakes, wetlands and beaches – in order to:

  • Adapt water treatment to the incoming organic matter – and eventual energy saving, CO2 print reduction and management cost optimization.
  • Ensure that treatment processes are working optimally.
  • Guarantee effluents comply with the corresponding regulations to avoid environmental damage.

WOLA technologies contribute to reduce the environment CO2 print, as for example monitoring the level of organic matter in the WWTP on real time, and regulating the aerators accordingly which brings significant energy savings.
