BurakVortex Flow Meter

SHARE

The vortex flowmeter is a flow measuring device that is used to measure the flowing mass and volume flow of liquid, gas, and steam in closed pipelines. This is a volumetric flow meter that comes with inbuilt temperature and pressure compensation for gas and steam measurement and without inbuilt temperature and pressure compensation for liquid application. Further, they come in two models, inline type vortex flow meter and insertion type vortex flow meter.

Working principle of Vortex Flow Meter
The measuring principle is based on the Karman vortex shedding street in the wake of a body built into the pipeline. As per the principle flow of fluid generates the vortices after passing through the bluff body of the flow meter. The bluff body comes in different designs such as square, rectangular, t-shaped, and trapezoidal shapes as per the manufacturer`s standard. Further, the vortices are sensed by the piezoelectric sensor to generate the frequency. Frequency is then used to calculate the flow of fluid. The velocity of a fluid is proportional to the frequency of the vortices generated. The flow rate thus is calculated by multiplying the cross-sectional area of the pipe and the velocity of the flow.

  • Total / accumulated total / flow rate
  • Good accuracy (1 to 2%)
  • It support higher flow range as well as high pressure
  • Can handle liquid, gas and steam
  • Quick response to fast changing flows
  • It does not require complex pressure impulse lines
  • less sensitive to wear
  • No moving parts
  • Maintenance is not required on a regular basis
  • Easy to Install
  • Available in wide variety of sizes
  • The flow meter is available in many temperature ranges
Construction of vortex flow meter

The vortex flow transmitter consists of a head-type flow indicator displaying the current flow rate and cumulative flow of the flowing medium. Along with the large graphical display it also has other communication and transmission outputs like RS 485 Communication and 4-20 mA output. To operate it requires an external power supply of 24 VDC. The electronic enclosure is certified to be weatherproof – IP 66 housing.

The mechanical construction consists of a fabricated stainless steel body and a concentric reducer and expander that enable stable flow rate measurements. Buff body with a piezoelectric sensor with end connection wafer type, flanged as per DIN/ ANSI Standard.

Vortex flow meter for steam flow measurement

Steam is generated through the boiler by adding heat energy. It is a very efficient and easily controlled heat transfer medium. It is often used for transporting energy from the boiler to any specific location in the plant where it is used to heat air, water, or process applications. Steam is a vapor form of water at high temperatures and pressure conditions.

As we know that measuring energy consumption is an important factor to improve energy efficiency. Efficient and accurate measurement through the steam meter is a must to determine the boiler efficiency excess use or any loss in the process line to minimize the reduction in plant running cost and product quality.

Traditionally the most common method of steam metering was through differential pressure measurement. The various types of differential pressure technique used for steam metering were orifice plate, venture meter, and V-cone meter. As differential pressure devices have low turn down with high-pressure loss which make measurement difficult. Inaccuracies occur due to zero and span drift when the temperature/pressure conditions fluctuate beyond the design parameters.

The vortex flow meter is known to be a highly accurate device for steam flow measurement. Vortex steam flow meter has liner measurement, large turndown ratio, high accuracy, and low-pressure drop. To meet the needs of customer Burak metering manufacture vortex flow meter. BA-VFM with pressure and temperature compensation to provide accurate flow output with a variety of high temperature ranges up to 350 deg c.
