The CPT test (mechanical type) is essentially the extent of resistance to opening up a bit of size and mechanical characteristics standardized, stuck in a land-speed constant (2 cm / sec). In Cone Penetration Testing, with the Begemann Mechanical Cone, the Qc (tip resistance) and RL (side friction) values are measured with a load cell and displayed on a readout electronic unit.

To obtain the Begemann probe movements the rods consist of an inner and an outer rod that act on the different elements of the probe.

The load cell is located in a removable unit, called "selector", that manages the Begemann probe movements by pushing the inner and outer rods alternately.

There are two different kinds of selectors:

Manual Selector
The operator must, before starting the pushing, operate on a lever that arranges the selector to push on the inner or on the outer rod.

Hydraulic Selector
During the pushing the rods are managed automatically by means of a hydraulic device. The operator must control only the pushing movement.

The values recorded by the load cell are acquired by means of an electronic switch to fixed and known as "Acquisition system".

Data acquired from the load cell are monitored on the display of the TGAS11 device.
The operator must manually transcribe the readings displayed during the penetration:

  • RP = First data represents the point resistance
  • RL = Second data represents the lateral resistence.
  • RT = Third data represents the total resistence

With TGSW01 software is possible to calculate the values of point resistance, lateral friction and the total resistance. We also calculated the ratio RP / RL (Begemann ratio 1965) and the RL / RP (Schmertmann ratio 1978 - FR% -).

Pagani Geotechnical Equipment also provides accessories (Begemann cone, rods, load cell) required for the implementation of the CPT tests.
