As limescale also promotes harmful bacteria, continuous treatment is required.The current options for commercial sites are chemical water softening or the physical conditioning of water.

Chemical water softening
is the traditional approach. It exchanges calcium for sodium to generate soft water, but also salt water during regeneration which may harm the environment upon discharge. The regeneration cycle, which can be daily, also wastes considerable amounts of water Servicing and delivery of salt bags can make softening an expensive process as well as increasing the carbon footprint. Water softening is rarely used in drinking water due to health concerns and this prevents water softening from providing complete site protection.
