They are generally exhausted from many processes, including metals operations, boilers, food processing, petroleum processing, pharmaceutical productions, chemical, paper plants, and power plants.

Flue gases generally contain nitrogen, CO2, trace amounts of oxygen and water vapor, and environmentally sensitive pollutants like oxide, carbon monoxide gas, sulfur oxides, and other traces of gas. Flue gas emits from the duct, stack, a large pipe, Chimney, or additional venting connected to a process system. Measuring the flow of flue gases for process control data reporting is usually mandated by environmental and regional air quality regulations. 

It is mediated by the Central Pollution Control Board that all industrial sectors have to measure and monitor emission from their plants as per the Air Prevention and Control of Pollution Act of 1981 and keep them under controlled limits.

Flue gas flow meters based on thermal technology are designed specifically to monitor the flow rate of emissions from industrial sources to ensure compliance with strict regulations governing the protection of the environment. They are often used in stacks to determine mass emissions from combustion sources.
