While the grade 317 SS Stud Bolt is tougher than 304 grade stainless steel, it is recommended to use chip breakers while machining them. The hardenability of 317 grade stainless steel will reduce if constant feeds and low speeds are used.The SS 317 Screws have excellent mechanical properties, similar to grade 316 stainless steel. The tensile strength of 317 grade stainless steel is 515 Mpa, its yield strength is about 205 Mpa, elongation percentage at 2” is around 35% while its maximum brinelled hardness value stands at 217.
Although oxyacetylene welding method is not preferred for 317 grade alloy, it can be welded using fusion and resistance methods. For instance, using the AWS E/ER317 or 317L filler metal technique can yield good result.The 317 stainless steel can be both hot worked as well as cold worked. For cold working 317 grade, all conventional techniques used on standard stainless steel can be used. The temperature to carry out hot working the alloy of 317 grade stainless steel is between the range of 1149°C - 1260°C. temperatures below 927°C must not be used for hot working this grade.
Since heat does not affect this grade, the Stainless Steel 317 Bolts are hardened by cold working. Cold working operations like Stamping, drawing, shearing, and heading can be done successfully on the SS 317 Bolts. Post-work annealing can be done to Stainless Steel 317 Bolts in both cold working in order to reduce internal stress and hot working to retain the corrosion resistance property.
