HongxinModel JIS SUS420J2 -Plastic Mold Steel

SHARE
JIS SUS420J2 is a stainless martensitic steel specifically designed for plastic molds and various tooling components. It is favored for its high corrosion resistance, ease of polishing, and superior wear resistance. Commonly used in the manufacture of injection molds and extrusion dies, SUS420J2 exhibits high hardenability and resistance to hot oxidation. The steel grade equivalents include 1.2083, X40Cr14, and 4Cr13. The material’s heat treatment involves annealing at 750-800°C, stress relieving at 600-650°C, preheating at 600-700°C, and austenitizing at 990-1040°C. Quenching involves cooling in oil or a thermal bath. Tempering must be done at 170-270°C to balance hardness and corrosion resistance and repeated at least twice. The material maintains a quenched hardness of HRC 52-56. SUS420J2 can be processed through various stages like normalization, annealing, quenching, and tempering. Its surface conditions can include black, peeled, polished, machined, ground, turned, or milled, and it undergoes extensive testing for properties like tensile strength, yield strength, impact value, and hardness.

  • Heat treatment

Annealing:

-Heat to 750~800℃, with hold at minimum rate for 3 hours.

-Furnace cooling.

Stress relieving:

To be carried out after machining and before the final heat treatment.

Heating to 600~650°C for 2 hours.

Hardening:

Preheating to 600~700℃;

- Austenitizing at 990~1040℃

- Oil or thermal bath cooling at 500~550℃, then oil cooling according to the steel shape and size.

Quenched hardness: HRC 52~56

Tempering:

To be carried out after hardening according to the required hardness; at 170-270℃ in order to match hardness and resistance to corrosion; permanence for at least 2 hours;

Tempering must be repeated at least twice at a temperature 30 ℃ lower than the previous. Cooling in air.
