SHARE

Mini pleat air filters are critical components in modern commercial and industrial HVAC systems, designed to enhance air filtration by increasing the surface area for capturing airborne particles. They are constructed from materials such as fiberglass or synthetic fibres, configured in tight pleats to maximize airflow while minimizing resistance. These filters are particularly beneficial in environments requiring high efficiency, offering benefits such as reduced risk of mold, lower energy costs due to larger surface areas, and durable construction for prolonged lifespan. They are available in various depths to fit different filter racks, and are suitable for diverse applications including office buildings, hospitals, manufacturing plants, and data centers. Different types include MERV, HEPA, and ULPA filters, each with specific ratings and capabilities for filtering particles of various sizes. Additionally, gasket configurations can be customized to ensure optimal airflow sealing, preventing bypass of unfiltered air.

  • Data centers that house delicate, dust-sensitive equipment
  • Retail environments (both standalone stores and shopping malls)

Definitions and Types of Mini Pleat HVAC Filters

Before you stock up on pleated filters, you need to know about the variety of types available. Not every kind of mini pleat HVAC filter is suitable for every kind of HVAC system and environment.

The first type to know is MERV filters. Short for “Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value,” a filter’s MERV rating is chosen based on how effectively the filter traps pollutants and particles. The scale runs from 1 (the lowest amount of filtration) to 20 (the highest amount).

Next up is DOP, an acronym for “Dispersed Oil Particulate.” DOP is a method of testing a filter’s integrity and efficiency. You’ll see filters with names like “DOP95,” which is why it’s crucial to understand this term.

A DOP95 filter, for example, has been proven 95% effective at removing particles .3 microns in size.

HEPA is another acronym you’ll see often, and it stands for “High Efficiency Particulate Air.” HEPA filters are designed, produced, tested, certified, and labeled according to current HEPA standards. According to the EPA website (https://www.epa.gov/), HEPA filters can, “…theoretically remove at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and any airborne particles with a size of 0.3 microns (µm). The diameter specification of 0.3 microns corresponds to the worst case; the most penetrating particle size (MPPS). Particles that are larger or smaller are trapped with even higher efficiency. Using the worst case particle size results in the worst case efficiency rating (i.e. 99.97% or better for all particle sizes).”

Lastly, the acronym ULPA is short for “Ultra Low Penetration Air.” ULPA filters utilize a very fine, random microfiber mesh to remove 99.999% of airborne particles that are .12 microns in size or larger, regardless of whether those particles are mold, bacteria, dust, or any other material.

Gasket Configuration to Suit Your Specific Needs

We can’t talk about mini pleat HVAC filters without also touching on gasket configuration. Gaskets ensure a complete seal and don’t let dirty air bypass the filters.

There are three main gasket configurations:

  • Upstream – Gasket is placed on the side of the filter where air enters, which blocks incoming air from bypassing around the edges
  • Downstream – Gasket is placed on the side where air exits, which forces filtered air along its intended path without any escaping
  • Both sides – Gaskets are placed on both sides of the filter (this is common in environments where maximum air purity is critical)

No matter what specific configuration you need for your facility’s mini pleat air filters, you can count on R.P. Fedder.
