Iron Exists 3 forms – elemental iron, ferrous and ferric states.Ferrous state is soluble form of iron and get changed to Ferric when reacts with air. Ferric ions reacts with hydroxyl ions to form Ferric hydroxide, reddish brown compound. Manganese is seldom found alone in a water supply. It is Frequently found in iron-bearing water but is more rare than iron. Manganese mainly causes clogging, staining, etc. Black Water ( suspended insoluble manganic hydroxide), is seldom found because a much higher pH is needed to precipitate manganic hydroxide than is necessary for the formation of ferric hydroxide.
