PGI is used to produce unsaturated polyester resins for bathroom fixtures and boat hulls; lower toxicity antifreeze, coolants and aircraft deicers; and cleaners. Propylene glycol has an unsurpassed reputation for safe use in many applications.

The use of LyondellBasell Propylene glycol (Industrial grade - PGI) in the following applications is prohibited:

  • Pharmaceutical excipient or Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API)
  • Applications involving human consumption
  • Cosmetics, toiletries, personal care products
  • Tobacco
  • Electronic cigarettes (E-cigarettes)
  • Theater fogs, artificial smoke
  • Cat food (21 CFR 582.1666)
  • Sprinkler systems over 30%

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has given propylene glycol the same classification given to common products such as vinegar and table salt: Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS).

Due to its low vapor pressure, toxicity and flammability, propylene glycol presents no special handling problems. However, overexposure or spillage should be strictly avoided as a matter of good safety practice.

Propylene glycol may require storage facilities designed to prevent moisture intrusion because of its hygroscopic nature. Storage vessels and transfer lines of mild steel may be used if slight increases in color and trace iron levels are not objectionable. Stainless steel and/or mild steel vessels with baked phenolic or epoxy-phenolic linings are recommended to promote long-term storage and to maintain high quality.
