AquasuiteModel Flow -Machine Learning and AI Solution for Wastewater Transport

SHARE

Aquasuite FLOW is a machine learning and AI solution for wastewater transport. It combines highly accurate prediction of levels and flows with automated optimised control of pumping stations.  FLOW maximises usage of sewer networks with the aim of reducing combined sewer overflow events, improving pollution control and ensuring constant flow in to wastewater treatment works (WwTW).

Cost-effective predictive maintenance

FLOW also monitors all major components of the transport system and identifies process anomalies. It presents clear, insightful information regarding non-compliance of capacity requirements across the entire system – ultimately detailing the condition of an individual pump. In this way, a pump or rising mains that needs maintenance can be prioritised. This allows planning of maintenance activities and cost-effective operations for wastewater transport systems.

Connects with existing data and systems

Aquasuite collects data from numerous data sources and provides control set points to assets automatically via existing SCADA or PLC control methods. Our aim is to be hardware agnostic and work with existing data collection and control systems.

  • Improved financial planning with predictive maintenance
  • Improved effluent quality due to peak reduction
  • Improved treatment processes and environmental compliance
  • Enables quick action from operators

Aquasuite FLOW uses its proven AI algorithms to make highly accurate predictions of level and dry weather flow (DWF) within the sewer and rising main systems. These predictions are then combined with rainfall data from various external sources, and tidal data if required. Once the predictions are made, Aquasuite understands the requirements of the network and can work to optimise flow within it.

The starting point for Aquasuite FLOW is usually the control of a terminal pumping station feeding a wastewater treatment works (WwTw). The system uses knowledge of the storage available within a catchment (in sumps, pipes, etc.) together with predictions of DWF, transit time and rainfall forecast to control the flow into the WwTW. When rainfall events are short in duration, Aquasuite can hold back the flow as it has a confident prediction of future levels. Conversely, if prolonged rainfall is expected it can pump early into the WwTW to create maximum storage for the expected flow.

Control of flow into the WwTW has several benefits:

  • Reduce peak loading ensuring maximum usage of tertiary treatment. In deployments, FLOW achieves a 58% reduction in bypasses of tertiary treatment.
  • Improved treatment efficiency. Removing peaks and troughs results in more stable effluent flow and load, in turn improving treatment performance.
  • Improved pollution control during rainfall events.

Aquasuite FLOW can then be extended into the network to control pumping stations within the catchment area. This has a similar goal of ensuring constant efficient flow through the network, reducing combined sewer overflow events and pollution. Where variable energy tariffs are in use, pumping can be optimally scheduled to save costs.
