This stainless steel grade has been developed for use in seawater and other aggressive chloride containing media. Hence, the 6 Moly 254 SMO Rod has a High resistance to stress related corrosion cracking.Some characteristics of the UNS S31254 6mo Bar includes their excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Alloy 254 SMO Bar is mainly comprised of 19.5% and 20.5% chromium, 17.5% to 18.5% nickel, 6% to 6.5% molybdenum like standard austenitic stainless steel grades. But unlike convention austenitic stainless steel grades, the ASTM A479 UNS S31254 contains about 0.18% to 0.22% nitrogen. The specific levels of Chromium, Nickel, Molybdenum and Nitrogen in its super austenitic 1.4547 Round Bar chemical makeup allows the SMO 254 Welding Rod to combine its impact toughness resistance to corrosion cracking, with pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. The result is strength of the 254 SMO Rod nearly twice that of 300 series stainless steels.
The UNS S31254 or the SMO 254 Round Bar is often referred to as a “6% Moly” grade due to the content of molybdenum. The 254 SMO Round Bar has the ability to withstand high temperatures while maintaining its high strength under volatile conditions.
