In terms of size, the refuse pit is designed to hold sufficient fuel for several days of combustion as waste is only delivered during the day and on working days but the plant operates around the clock.

The tipping hall and refuse pit are closed buildings so that dust and odour nuisance is prevented. The air required for the combustion process is extracted from the refuse pit, which generates negative pressure in the pit.
