Max-AI technology is an artificial intelligence system that identifies recyclables and other items for recovery. Through deep learning technology, Max-AI employs multi-layered neural networks, along with a vision system, to see and identify objects similar to the way a person does. The technology will drive improvements in Material Recovery Facility (MRF) design, operational efficiency, recovery, system optimization, maintenance, and more.
Max is able to identify materials in a MRF by quickly processing video images through a detection pipeline and deep learning neural networks. Deep Learning neural networks are computational machine learning models based on distributed representation that are inspired by the architecture of the human brain.
These systems, rather than being explicitly programmed, use machine-learning approaches and excel in areas where the solution or feature detection is difficult to express in a traditional computer program. Rather than relying on deterministic decision-making, using discreet values and comparisons to reach a decision, Max-AI technology uses self-learned behavior, making a decision based on the neural network’s inference.
The neural network solves problems much in the same way that the human brain would. From birth, humans have processed images with our eyes, learning to identify objects. Max learns in the same way through deep learning techniques. Only possible with the latest AI algorithms and GPU-accelerated parallel high-performance computing, Max is trained with millions of images with different materials already identified. Time and time again, Max discovers the best path to take through its artificial brain to reach the correct answer. Through millions of iterations, Max learns how to identify new images, correctly classifying objects never seen before. Max has seen hundreds of thousands of similar items, so when a new item is seen, Max has already worked out the correct thought-process to immediately recognize it.
