The 301/301L alloy pipes are forged by proportionately mixing together elements such as chromium, sulfur, manganese, etc. The carbon content in 301 is comparatively different than 301L, which increases its capacity to be subjected to machining. The weldability of the former is, however, not as efficient as the latter and has to go through heat treatment, particularly annealing to become more weldable and corrosion-resistant. The 301L grade has a lower amount of carbon which makes it ductile and grants it better resistance against corrosion as compared to 301.
A cost-effective alternative to 304-grade pipes, the 301/301L pipes are widely used because of their availability and versatility. The presence of liquid solvents that can cause rusting of the metallic pipes is a constant challenge and grades 301 and 301L are solutions to these problems. With their excellent corrosion resistance property against acids, they can be exploited even in a corrosive environment. Oxidation being a key process leading to corrosion, the pipes are able to withstand operating in an oxidizing environment. The strength and frictional capacity displayed by the grades into consideration, are exceptional and enable them to smoothly function in stressful conditions without cracking.
The pipes are employed in a wide range of applications and industries such as in the manufacture of pressure vessels, aerospace parts, construction of railway carriages, fasteners, tools, blades, electrical components, etc.
