Model Rox - Oil Mist Eliminators
Modern CNC metal cutting utilizes high speed machining, milling and turning equipment that is increasingly housed in a fully enclosed machining center. The need for effective, efficient and complete abatement of oil mist, coolant mist and smoke is critical to a safe workplace in the CNC shop environment.
Why is it important to keep these pollutants out of the machine shop air we breathe?
When CNC machining of metals is performed, a coolant or lubricant is applied to facilitate forming of the metal parts. The liquid oil or coolant is converted to particulate matter (PM) in the form of small droplets or aerosols and vapors due to friction and heat at the machining/part interface. These indoor air pollutants generated by metal working fluids, chemical additives and fluid microbial growths are hazardous to the human respiratory system.
An enclosed machining center does not mean the metalworking fluids and smoke will be contained in a safe manner. Proper engineering controls are necessary to abate such hazards in the work place. Oil mist collectors or oil mist eliminators for industrial machining centers come in numerous forms.Oil mist collectors utilize centrifugal separation technology, progressive filtration, and electrostatic technology. Over the last 22 years of evaluating these types of systems, we are satisfied that properly applied there is one technology that safely removes metal working fluids (MWF) and smoke from the air within and around machining centers.Using an aerosol particle counter, we can reliably provide air that is scrubbed of MWF condensables and smoke to a level of 0.0 mg per cubic meter. For more information on how to obtain clean air in a metalworking machine shop, please see our download “Is clean air really possible in a CNC machine shop?” (pdf | powerpoint). There are several critical aspects to consider when investigating the effectiveness of an oil mist eliminator or oil mist collector purchase.
How efficient is the oil mist removal system over time?
The easiest way to determine this is by conducting a side-by-side test over a minimum of 60 to 90 days. This will be sufficient time in which to evaluate the various technologies, including energy consumption.
After a specific period of evaluation, prior to replacement of any filters in the system, how does the unit perform when the outlet air is measured for aerosol and particulate matter using a particle counter?
How much energy is consumed during the process?
