A state-of-the-art facility located next to a customer`s pulp mill. Our innovative Integrated Manufacturing Model (also known as Chemical Island) – a state-of-the-art facility located next to a customer`s pulp mill, often inside the perimeter fence. With a full-scale Integrated Manufacturing Model in place, our customers benefit from a tried, tested and successful concept managed and operated – on site, 24/7 – by our experts who ensure consistent production and delivery of chemicals needed to operate the mill.

At a typical Integrated Manufacturing Model, we manufacture sodium chlorate and generate chlorine dioxide which is then pumped directly to a pulp mill. Depending on the customers` needs, we can also manage all the logistics for the other chemicals required for their pulp mill operation.

The first Integrated Manufacturing Model – our Bahia plant at the Veracel Celulose Pulp Mill – was brought online in 2005. Most recently, the Imperatriz Integrated Manufacturing Model was opened in May 2014 to service the Maranhão Pulp Mill in northern Brazil.

Modern pulp mills normally generate excess utilities (e.g., such as steam and water from the pulping process) that can be used as fuel in other manufacturing processes. Our Integrated Manufacturing Model often use power sourced from biomass, these reused resources effectively lower the carbon footprint of an Integrated Manufacturing Model, while simultaneously producing chemicals more efficiently. Simultaneously, on-site sodium chlorate production reduces transportation requirements.

Deciding when and where to build an Integrated Manufacturing Model is complex. We work with each customer to determine the best solution for their needs.

Typical benefits of an Integrated Manufacturing Model:

  • Sustainable manufacturing processes, reducing environmental footprint,
  • Dedicated partner, managing all chemical handling requirements,
  • Proximity to customer point-of-use reduces transportation, increasing eco-efficiency and safety,
  • Energy derives from the pulp mill (energy produced from biomass),
  • Shared services with the pulp mill (security, entrance, scale, canteen), enabling cost optimization,
  • Local jobs created, positively impacting the community,
  • Long-term contract, commitment and partnership.
