NovaSet - Model LS -Cassettes for Early Stage Process Development and Optimization
In the early stages of process development, time and product are at a premium. The choice of membrane has been narrowed, but not been finalized, and the process is not yet established. Decisions need to be made regarding feed pressure, TMP and screen geometry. All these elements must eventually coalesce into a scalable robust effective commercial manufacturing process. The primary membrane screening process enables process development scientists to select the most promising membrane candidates. For pilot and process scale these membranes are assembled into devices (i.e. cassettes) with different channel geometries and characteristic hydrodynamics.
The process development researcher now has two concerns:
- The effect of channel height on the process and flux vs selectivity performance profile of each candidate membrane.
- Scalability, the performance determined at the < 0.1m2 scale linearly to at multiple m2 scale.
The NovaSet-LS cassette addresses these concerns, optimized channel geometry and enhanced device rigidity, ensures hydraulic performance is maintained when scaling up through the NovaSet-LS and NovaSet cassette family resulting in optimal and reproducible scaling performance. Additionally, each cassette undergoes rigorous QA lot release testing to verify it meets specification. Cassettes are tested for both air integrity and for their hydrodynamic performance. This testing ensures cassette-to-cassette consistency. The result? Scalable process development and reproducible manufacturing. Graph 1 shows the pressure drop vs. cross flow specification for the NovaSet-LS cassettes. Graph 2 shows the TMP vs. water flux for the 10 kD NovaSet-LS cassettes through scale-up from 0.02 m2 to 0.5 m2.
