AOEModel OBAS -Ocean Buoy Array System

SHARE

AOE was established to implement the patented Wave Energy Conversion technology called the OBAS. This initial technology has led to a total of six patents for associated technologies. These associated technologies can be viewed as accessories that use the compressed air that the OBAS will generate. The OBAS is a point-absorber style of wave energy conversion device. It is anchored to the ocean floor using tethers and the motion of ocean waves moves the buoy up to compress air in a specially designed cylinder. One of the key characteristics of the OBAS is that it uses compressed air as the energy storage medium and does not generate electricity in the water, which has been found to be a severe limitation to other wave energy devices due to electrolysis.

The patented AOE Ocean Buoy Array System generates high volumes of compressed air. After 15 years of development, the AOE OBAS is commercially ready for various applications. AOE has been working with UVIC Pacific Regional Institute for Marine Energy Discovery for the past 7 years, modelling and simulating the operation of the OBAS in various wave conditions. A 3 buoy system has a rated capacity in excess of 100 kW continuous with capacity to generate over 850 MWh or desalinate in excess of 280 million litres of water per year without any fuel costs or negative environmental impacts.

  • Imagine a large buoy on the surface that is moored to the bottom of the ocean, and in between is a reverse bicycle pump.
  • When the buoy is pulled up by the waves, a piston generates pressure.
  • Multiple buoys in series accumulate energy stored as high pressure.
  • The pressure is stored energy that can be used to desalinate seawater, oxygenate water, and generate electricity.
