SPI - Petro Plug
Petro-Plugs are disposable oil barriers that are more effective and less expensive than oil/water separators. Designed to fit standard piped floor drains in boiler rooms, garages, warehouses, oil storage areas and underground vaults, the Petro-Plug removes low levels of diesel, gasoline and oils while allowing water to flow through as usual. Depending on the drain diameter, Petro-Plugs installed in vertical drains have a flow rate of 1-3 gallons per minute. Uncontaminated water drains at approximately 5 quarts per minute with standard-sized floor drains. If an oil spill occurs, the Petro-Plug seals off. This shuts off any flow into sewer lines, sump pits, oil/water separators, catch basins, etc., allowing spills to be cleaned up at the source and potentially saving thousands of dollars in cleanup costs and fines.
Petro-Plugs are easy to install: 3-inch Petro-Plugs are designed to simply slide into standard 3-inch pipe drains, while 4-inch Petro-Plugs will fit 4-inch pipe drains. Featuring a unique twist-and-lock system that provides a watertight seal without any sealants, the Petro-Plug is also designed for easy removal, allowing temporary unrestricted discharge of uncontaminated water.
For underground transformer vaults or areas with a high water table, the underground vault Petro-Plug has a check valve that prevents groundwater from rising into the Petro-Plug. A filter can also be used above the Petro-Plug on the floor to filter out dirt and debris. These Petro-Plugs have hinged tops to allow for filter replacement.
Constructed from rigid PVC for strength and durability, the Petro-Plug has a useful life of 1-5 years (depending on installation location) or until a spill occurs, whichever happens first. Petro-Plugs can be disposed via landfilling or incineration.
The Petro-Plug® was designed for indoor applications where there is a low flow rate of water. The original Petro-Plugs® came in sizes for 3 and 4 inch floor drains. These Petro-Plugs® have a unique flange design: Only the bottom flange or mounting ring is permanently bonded to the outer diameter of the drain with construction adhesive. The top flange is attached to the Petro-Plug® and is a twist and lock with the bottom flange (mounting ring). An O-ring between the two flanges makes a water/oil tight seal. The Petro-Plug® can then be removed without tools if a large drainage flow is required than re-inserted to again provide oil containment protection and water drainage.
The above drawing shows the outside diameter of both the 3” and 4” Petro-Plug®. The Petro-Plugs® are available in 6”, 8” and 10” lengths. Before ordering it is necessary to find out where the drain curves to determine the correct length. This type of Petro-Plug® is also designed to be used with a floor drain in a sump. In a sump, dirt filters can be installed above the Petro-Plug® keeping it clean and water flowing.
