The presence of HLA-B*27 allele is strongly associated with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a chronic inflammatory disease of the axial musculoskeletal system and a few other rheumatic disorders (Reiter`s syndrome, acute anterior uveitis, and inflammatory bowel disease). HLA-B*27 testing is routinely used to screen for AS since ~90% of patients with AS have the HLA-B*27 allele. The geographical distribution of the different subtypes of HLA-B*27, with HLA-B*2705 being common in Caucasians and American Indians, HLA-B*2704 and 2706 in Asians and HLA-B*2702 in Mediterranean populations.
