OXYGEN AND MOISTURE BARRIERS IN PACKAGING

Oxygen and moisture barriers are often used as an effective means of safely and hygienically storing or transporting a product. While this technology can be very beneficial, it also carries some risks, as even the smallest packaging faults can compromise the cleanliness or safety of the product being contained. To reduce these risks and minimize the packaging`s ecological footprint, manufacturers are constantly searching for ways to improve barrier technology, particularly for oxygen and moisture barriers.
Today, most oxygen and moisture barriers are made of polyethylene (PE). The higher the PE`s density, the greater its ability to seal a product against moisture. High melt index and narrow molecular weight distribution can also impact the strength of a packaging barrier.

In addition to regular PE barriers, multilayer PE films are available as well. These barriers are affected by the individual layers` positions, with each layer experiencing different conditions during the extrusion process. With this type of barrier, however, it is important that the outer layer has the ability to withstand more intensive shearing and cooling forces than the layers located more closely to the interior. As with regular PE barriers, achieving a high melt index and a close molecular weight distribution allows for improved layering.
