Protein Skimmer
Protein Skimmer Is used to remove proteins and lipids h through the production of foams. Basically its operation involves the injection of air through injector and rises by a column mixing with the water. The oxygen in the air oxidizes and coagulate dissolved organic matter. The solidified material is then forming a layer of foam on the surface that is periodically removed.
The fundamental principle of a protein skimmer operation is the floating caused from dissolved organic matter and proteins in suspension and its collection in a collecting chamber for their withdrawal. To provoke this artificial floating air bubbles are injected in the water through a venturi.
For this process to be carried out, it is necessary that the organic substances or the particles have a greater affinity to join the air bubbles than water, so that the flow of air will be able to drag them to the top of the skimmer. Substances that with a greater affinity to the air than water shall be removed. This affinity is given by the water surface tension which is the tension that presents a liquid surface in contact with the atmosphere or its vapor, i.e. a gaseous phase.
Following are the main reactions taking place in the described Protein Skimmer:
- Los sólidos no disueltos de los productos tensioactivos se depositan en la interfase entre el agua y el gas, concentrándose, de este modo, en la espuma
- Los sólidos no tensioactivos no disueltos se ponen en contacto con los compuestos tensioactivos disueltos, y así concentrarse en la espuma
- El material de desecho disuelto puede ser oxidado por el ozono, de tal manera que puede ponerse en contacto con las burbujas de gas ascendentes.
- La espuma residual formada será transportada por la corriente de gas que fluye hacia arriba a través del tubo de espuma hacia el exterior.
