Designs & Prototypes is a privately held corporation founded in 1984 by Dr. Jens Peter Dybwad to focus on the development and supply of compact and portable FT-IR spectrometers, as well as contract research and development. Dr. Dybwad is a pioneer in the area of fast-scanning spectrometers, as well as being known for his compact and robust designs.

In 1991 Mr. Winthrop Wadsworth joined the company, bringing with him expertise in spectrometer electronics and processing, which allowed the company to expand further. Over the next years the company built its strong reputation for high quality, excellent reliability, and the innovative designs which provide mobile or compact solutions which are low in power consumption, high in performance, and which take up very small footprints.
