Biotox - Regenerative Thermal Oxidation (RTO)
The BIOTOX regenerative thermal oxidation process consists of oxidizing in a combustion chamber the organic compounds (vocs and cocs) contained in the industrial emissions being treated, while recovering sensible heat from combustion gases by means of ceramic beds. The recovered heat is then used to preheat entry gases thanks to an efficient heat transfer between entry and exit gases. The typical combustion temperature is 800†C while the residence time is one second. The combustion gases, mainly composed of water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2 ), are then released into the atmosphere.

Application/Industries Served
Conventional application: VOC treatment
Regenerative thermal oxidation (RTO) technology was developed in the 1970s and 1980s. By the early 1990s, the technology occupied an enviable position in relation to other technologies for the treatment of conventional VOC emissions. It made it possible to achieve a destruction efficiency greater than 99% while keeping operating costs low. Biothermica has the expertise for treating emissions from the following industries:
Graphic art and printing;
- Painting booth;
- Textiles:
- Food;
- Flooring;
- Petrochemicals;
- And other applications.
Special application: Treatment of COCs and corrosive emissions
In the early 1990s, RTO technology did not treat fumes containing COCs. The main difficulties in treating fumes containing COCs were the following:
- COC destruction efficiency of less than 90%;
- Accumulation and clogging up of entry pipes and saddle beds;
- Uncontrolled ignition of accumulations in beds;
- Overheating incidents damaging valves, pipes and blowers.
The use of RTO technology in treating corrosive emissions was also avoided because of operation and maintenance difficulties.
In the face of stricter environmental standards for COCs and the absence of any reliable, efficient and economical control technology, Biothermica’s research department started a development program in 1990 aimed at adapting RTO technology to the treatment of COCs. The program resulted in a first unit being installed in 1991 at a plant producing asphalt paper.
The experience acquired since then by Biothermica in treating COCs and corrosive emissions has enabled the company to develop a large field of expertise. Biothermica became recognized for the excellence and reliability of its equipment and systems for treating emissions containing TRSs, PAHs, and dioxins and furans. The following applications are described below:
- Asphalt roofing plant
- HAP and heavy aliphatic compounds – Condensable emissions
- Kraft pulp plant
- TRS – Corrosive emissions
- Anode manufacturing plant (aluminum smelters)
- Pitch vapor – PAH – Condensable emissions
- Magnesium plant
- Dioxins and furans – Condensable and corrosive emissions
