SHARE

An optical fiber’s ability to perform in the field is often influenced by the type of polymer coating over its glass core. Fiber optics function in many environments with just a primary coating. Environments such as oil and gas sensing, however, may demand a secondary coating to provide additional protection during cable assembly and deployment.

More industries rely on fiber optics for communication and sensing as well as a host of growing applications. Zeus offers an array of coating options to make fibers more robust in applications that require additional mechanical strength and resistance to radiation and abrasion. Zeus has the ability to coat fiber optics with polymers such as PEEK, PFA, ETFE, PVDF, and FEP.

New From Zeus: Thermally Stable PEEK

PEEK Thermally Stable coating for fiber optics protects these delicate sensing devices in the most difficult environments. With superior strength and abrasion resistance and a maximum service temperature of 500 °F (260 °C), PEEK easily withstands the rigors of oil and gas exploration such as in steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) applications. PEEK also protects in low temperature applications (to -94 °F / -70 °C) with minimal associated attenuation through wide temperature cyclings. PEEK coating thrives in chemical, steam, and radiological environments making it highly suited for the nuclear industry. Fibers coated with our Thermally Stable PEEK are likewise ideal for monitoring structural integrity as an imbedded sensor. Protection with PEEK extends the life of expensive and delicate fiber optics saving premature redeployment costs as well as the associate labor and time.
