Safkeg - Model 3940A -Outer Container Keg
The SAFKEG consists of an Outer Container Keg (Design No 3940) which carries a resealable Inner Container (Design No 3941) within insulating and shock absorbing cork packing. The Inner Container carries an Innermost Container (Design No 3942). The Outer Container Keg has a fabricated stainless steel body with a large stainless steel lined cavity and a bolted stainless steel lid. The space provided between the fabricated body and the lined cavity is filled with phenolic resin foam thermal insulation. The Inner Container is a resealable stainless steel containment vessel. The Innermost Container is a second resealable stainless steel containment vessel. Cavity: 128mm x 366mm.
Package Type
Designed as a B(U) Package to the IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Materials and with 10 CFR 71.
Certification
Primary certification has been approved through the US DOE. The package could also to be potentially certified by the US NRC and validated by the US DOT for use for international shipments.
Containment
Double containment is provided by the combination of the resealable Inner Container and the resealable Innermost Container. This double containment meets the requirements of 10 CFR 71.63 (1989) for solid plutonium in powder form.
The lids of both containers have double O-ring seals with an interspace between the O-ring seals which facilitates leak testing to ensure that the seals achieve the prescribed levels of leaktightness.
