Malmberg’s long history started on 7 April 1866 in the village of Yngsjö, on the southeast coast of Sweden, when the master blacksmith Jöns Mattisson-Malmberg founded the company. Since his interest was focused principally on water, he spent much of his time developing new drilling techniques. Malmberg’s first wells were drilled as far back as the 1880s and, ever since then, our core operations have revolved around water.

Malmberg’s story begins when 23-year-old Smith Jöns Malmberg 1866 buy a forge in Yngsjö and registers a company under its name. Jöns is on an ingenious solution to filter wells and keep pollution away, while he develops an equally ingenious method to quickly and easily dig down to the fresh groundwater in clean gravel.

After a few years, forge got water technology as a new line of business, and it’s the way it should remain even when future generations take over and develop the family business.

As the modern welfare state during the 1900s expanded in Sweden, there is an increasing need for a supply of running fresh water to more households. In the ’30s and 40’s the first wastewater treatment plants are built and then the post-war record years follow with the ever-increasing demand for greater well drilling projects and water utilities for municipalities and companies.

At the same time, the company develops in line with the times. Malmberg’s experience in wastewater treatment provides expertise in the recovery of biogas as a renewable energy source. Well, drilling leads to the construction of Sweden’s first groundwater heating system, which in turn resulted in a focus on geothermal energy.

155 years after Jöns Malmberg with his own hands created the innovative filter well is the family name synonymous with innovation, environment, energy, and creativity – all with water as the common denominator.
