In the United States, if you store over 250 US gallons of fuel aboveground for commercial purposes you must ensure:

1. It is contained within a purpose-designed storage vessel that is double-walled.
2. You maintain specified separation distances between fuel storage tanks, and processes from that of other equipment and occupied buildings.

Bunded areas should be sized to hold 110% of the capacity of the largest storage tank and are traditionally constructed from concrete or masonry adding to project costs and build times.

All SHIELD fire rated fuel storage tanks are manufactured using a steel double-walled construction, essentially a tank within a tank, and fireproofed to give a 4-hour fire rated protection rating as standard.

This integral secondary containment system creates an internal self-bunded solution and ensures traditional bund wall containment areas are no longer required.

SHIELD FIREGUARD Double-Walled Tank = 100% Steel Primary Tank + 10% Fireproof insulated interstitial space + Secondary Mild Steel Outer Tank which equates to a bunded area of 110% of the storage tanks capacity.

Each tank is constructed with a minimum 3” interstitial space around the primary tank and filled with a lightweight, monolithic and highly efficient fireproof material. This protects the primary tank and contents in the unlikely event of a fire or extreme heat.

Our SHIELD fire rated tanks not only passed the UL 2 hour fire test but exceeded it with a consistent 4-hour fire rating as standard. It has also be designed to provide additional protection to the primary tank against projectile impact and vehicle impact.

SHIELD FIRE RATED TANKS HAVE A 4-HOUR FIRE RATING AS STANDARD

SHIELD fire rated tanks are built to Underwriters Laboratories, UL-142 and UL 2085 specifications and carry the FIREGUARD® certification mark. They also also meet the CARB, California Air Resource Board, testing requirements for air emissions and are built in accordance with the Steel Tank Institute’s F-941 standard.

SHIELD FIREGUARD® UL-2085 construction standard meets and exceeds all the requirements set forth by UL-2080 for Fire Resistant Tanks.

Safe Separation Distances

The Hazardous Materials Code from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) outlines fundamental safeguards for the storage, use, and handling of flammable and combustible liquids and hazardous materials in and around all occupancies and facilities within a commercial environment.

Safeguards such as defined minimum separation distances between fuel storage areas and buildings or public areas. However, practical on-site conditions can challenge these minimum separation distances and in doing so, break NFPA guidelines. That is how a SHIELD FIRE RATED TANK can help.
