Softeners
Water hardness refers to the concentration of calcium and magnesium dissolved in water. Often this is referred to as the lime content as well. The discomfort and problems with calcium are well known. At home the lime often manifests persistent and in many places including:
- Boilers, water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines
- Coffee and espresso machines, steamers
- Mixers and taps, pumps, thermostats, valves
- Shower heads and walls, bathtubs, sinks and toilets
Effective water softening
The most effective way of water softening (the removal of lime from water) is based on exchanging of ions with a ion exchanger. Ions are the smallest soluble parts in water. Ion exchanger is a porous, granular synthetic material (resin).This way of softening is applied with great succes for a long time already in traditional water softeners. By flowing through the resin, the calcium and magnesium ions that are present in the water are exchanged against the sodium ions that initially are present on the resin. This exchange process continues until the exchange resin is saturated (nearly all sodium ions of the resin are exchanged with calcium and magnesium ions). Now (automatically) the regeneration of the resin is executed, in which the resin is flushed with a brine solution (sodium chloride). During this regeneration the hardness ions are flushed from the resin to the sewer and the resin is loaded with sodium ions again.
Since a couple of years, Honeywell has a special variation on the traditional water softener on the market, the KaltecCool.The KaltecCool is the first ion exchange resin that does not use sodium chloride for regeneration but magnesium chloride. The result is that only calcium is exchanged against magnesium and as a result the total hardness remains the same. However, since magnesium precipitates much less than calcium you will not notice any negative effects. On the contrary, magnesium is an essential mineral for humans providing a range of health benefits. Daily use of magnesium can help to prevent several diseases (such as: migraines, asthma, hearing disordersm neurotic disorders, heart and circulatory problems and many other symptoms).
Since the hardness of the water remains unchanged, the KaltecCool meets the drinking water requirement in the act for any (trade) company that is effective from January 1, 2006. This act states that the hardness of drinking water after softening and / or conditioning should be between 1 and 2.5 mmol / l or between 5.6 and 14 ° dH.
