Meteolabor - Soil Moisture Measuring Instrument

SHARE

To conduct the soil analysis, a probe is inserted 2.5m into the soil through a measurement tube. The profile of the soil moisture is measured with a resolution of 10 to 20mm. The capacitive probe is measuring dielectricity of the soil, which is a combination of material constant, soil density and humidity.  The resulting data is automatically identified with the correlating measurement tube number, time, and date. Up to 100 measurements can be stored in the instrument’s internal memory.

  • The measurement accuracy is 1.5% independent of the soil structure.

The probe is put on the measurement tube in the field and the connection cable is plugged into the instrument inside the carrying case. When the corresponding command button is pressed, the probe automatically descends inside the tube and then ascends, returning to the starting point. The data (measured values, measurement time, date and tube number) can subsequently be evaluated by software application which is provided with the system.

Fibrous-glass reinforced plastic tubes, with a diameter of 127 mm, are affixed with fittings for ground insertion by an electropneumatic hammer. Tube lengths include: 1.25 m, 1.65 m, or 2.5 m.

After the measurement tube has been inserted into the ground, the soil around the measurement location is frozen with liquid nitrogen and a calibration measurement is taken. This data are used for compensating the soil structure.
