Additionally, all Grade 303 Bars and Rods undergo a series of practical tests to ensure their durability.However, the corrosion resistance of this alloy grade is generally lower than that of grade 304. Even though sulphur improves machinability, it also results in certain drawbacks in the ASTM A479 UNS S30300 hex bar. First, the alloy’s corrosion resistance is reduced. Second, its toughness is slightly reduced. 

Furthermore, those regions in the microstructure of astm a276 type 303 flat bar which contain sulphur act as initiators for corrosion by means of pitting. But for both intermittent and continuous use, the alloy exhibits good resistance to oxidation, up to temperatures 927°C. Yet, manufacturers do not recommend using the JIS SUS 303 black bar at temperatures exceeding 760°C, solely because of higher carbon content, promoting carbide precipitation.

Unlike austenitic grade 304, stainless steel 303 contains sulphur or selenium. The addition of element sulphur is referred to as stainless steel 303, but the addition of element selenium is referred to as 303se, indicating that the metal has been alloyed with selenium. 

Using either of these two elements, the WNR 1.4305 square bar has been optimised for machinability. Therefore, if superior machinability properties are required, this alloy is the best choice. Additionally to improved machinability, 303 Steel Cold Finished Bars have superior galling characteristics.

This alloy grade, however, tends to have a lower corrosion resistance than grade 304. The addition of sulphur improves the machinability of the ASTM A479 UNS S30300 hex bar, but it also causes certain drawbacks. The alloy becomes less corrosion-resistant. In addition, its toughness properties are slightly reduced.

Alloy description
