The L against the grade number indicates that this variety of stainless steel is a low carbon one. The carbon content in these Stainless Steel 904L Fasteners is a maximum of 0.02%. In fact, the low carbon content in these fasteners makes them resistant to sensitization by welding, thereby preventing intergranular corrosion.
This high alloyed stainless steel grade has some amount of copper added in its alloy in order to enhance its resistance to strong reducing acids like - sulphuric acid.Other properties of the 904L Bolts Nuts include its excellent formability, toughness and weldability. Grade 904 L is non-magnetic in nature, hence, it can be used in applications where its non-magnetic nature can prove useful to the designed product.
While fasteners manufactured from Grade 904L stainless steels offer good oxidation resistance, the structural stability of this grade collapses at high temperatures beyond 400°C. the alloy of 904L Stainless Steel Bolts can be solution treated between the temperature range of 1090 to 1175°C, following which, the fastener is quenched by rapid cooling.
The 1.4539 Bolt offer good resistance to stress corrosion cracking as well as crevice corrosion, a property that is attributed to the high content of both nickel and molybdenum. In order to achieve optimum resistance to stress corrosion cracking, grade 904L needs to be processed by cold working followed by solution treating. Nevertheless, the grade 904L Bolts are still susceptible to cracking by stress related cracking, especially in chlorine environments.
The applications of the 904L Screws can be seen in piping systems, gas scrubbing plants, oil refinery components, pollution control equipment, seawater cooling devices, heat exchangers, and bleaching systems or in acetic, phosphoric and sulphuric acid processing plants , wiring in electrostatic precipitators, pulp and paper processing industries.
