Chemifloc - Sulphuric Acid
Sulphuric Acid is a colorless, viscous liquid recognized for its high density, approximately 1.84 kg/l, almost twice that of water. This chemical is inherently odorless at standard temperatures and exhibits a strong attraction to water, releasing heat upon dilution. Being highly corrosive and reactive, it necessitates careful handling, especially considering its potential irritant effects on skin, eyes, and the gastrointestinal tract. Two principal manufacturing processes exist: as a by-product from pyro-metallurgical smelting and refining of sulphide ores, and the sulphur-burning process via the contact method. Both involve the conversion of Sulphur Dioxide to Sulphur Trioxide, subsequently forming Sulphuric Acid with water. In smelter acid production, the Sulphur Dioxide gas undergoes extensive purification prior to conversion. Sulphuric Acid finds widespread use across numerous industries, underscoring its industrial significance.

Sulphuric acid is manufactured in 2 primary ways as a by-product in the pyro-metallurgical smelting and refining of sulphide ores or via the sulphur-burning process utilising the contact method.
Both processes convert Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) to Sulphur Trioxide (SO3) and then with the addition of water Sulphuric Acid (H2SO4) is formed. In the case of smelter acid, a vigorous cleaning process is carried out on the Sulphur Dioxide gas prior to conversion to Sulphur Trioxide.
