Protein (cysteine residues) and non-protein (e.g. homocysteine and glutathione) thiol groups (R-SH) are central components of the extracellular antioxidant defense. High concentrations of free thiols are indicative of a favorable redox status, while low levels of free thiols are associated with different oxidative stress related diseases. Reduced levels of free thiols arise from its rapid oxidation to disulfides in the presence of high amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
