CarbonBuiltModel Reversa -Ultra-Low Carbon Concrete Technology

SHARE

CarbonBuilt’s Reversa™ process includes innovations to both the concrete mix design and its curing process. On the formulation side, we introduce portlandite (a widely-available commodity chemical; also known as calcium hydroxide or hydrated lime), reduce the usage of traditional Portland cement and increase the use of low-cost and low-carbon supplementary cementitious and filler materials. Concrete products are then formed using the same processes and equipment that are used today.

After forming, the concrete products are cured with CO2 using a process that does not require expensive capture, compression or purification of the CO2, high temperature or elevated pressure.  This flexibility enables use of a wide range of CO2 containing streams ranging from point-source or distributed emissions that can be used directly, to merchant gas sourced from such sources, to emerging direct air capture technologies.

The Reversa process reduces emissions by at least 70%, and potentially more than 100%, through a combination of utilization (permanently embedding CO2 into the concrete) and avoidance (reducing CO2 emissions associated with the raw materials).

TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT
Development of the Reversa technology at UCLA began in 2014. In 2020, with support from the U.S. Department of Energy and the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE, the technology was used to produce over 10,000 concrete blocks using the CO2 in flue gas taken directly from a coal power plant at the Wyoming Integrated Test Center.

In early 2021, a second demonstration was successfully completed at the National Carbon Capture Center in Alabama in which CO2 from coal and natural gas power plants was used to produce more than 5,000 blocks.

In parallel to commercializing our technology in the concrete masonry market,  development work is underway to expand our product portfolio to include other precast concrete products.
