Ultraviolet Light
Ultraviolet light and the region of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum which is located between the X-rays and visible light with wavelengths ranging from 180 to 400 nanometers (nm).
Ultraviolet light, commonly known as UV, is issued in four different bands UVV, UVA, UVAB and UVC. Thus, the radiation with greater germicidal effect is located between the bands UVC and UVB, corresponding to 260 nm.
Thus the wavelength to 254 nm generated by monochromeissuers (low pressure) provide the maximum effectiveness germicidal` machinery by selectively turning off the five major groups of microorganisms, viruses, bacteria, fungi, algae and protozoa.
That is to say, the energy produced by the UVC radiation damages the nucleic acid molecules forming double (thymine dimers) that block the replication of DNA, preventing the development of the cell.
EFFECTIVE DOSE
The reactors in the BIOUV HDPE ranges are dimensioned according to the flow rate: it is the combination of the contact time in the reactor, the power of the lamp(s), the consideration of the specific transmission factor of the salt water (85%), less than that of fresh water, that will ensure that the necessary dose (expressed in millijoules per square centimeter or mJ/cm2) sufficient to kill 99.9% of the microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, algae in suspension,…) is received.
The reactors, fitted to the filtration circuits, continually treat the flow rate (decided according to the indicated turbidity and transmission) each time it flows through. All microorganisms are thus destroyed without any addition of chemicals. The water is thus healthy and crystal clear.
Disinfection is used to remove bacteria and viruses, and other harmful living beings that might interfere with the vital balance of the aquarium (fungi, phytoplankton and zooplankton, etc.).)
This process should be used after filtration, as the particles in suspension and organic compounds usually decrease the effectiveness of these.
It is the most used system in aquaculture mainly to disinfect clean waters. These are only applicable in waters slightly charged with matter in suspended solids and low iron content.
